DESCRIPTION
Desert Islands is one of Abu Dhabi’s largest tourism developments. Based around 8 natural islands in the Western region of Abu Dhabi it aims to become one of the world’s largest sustainable new island based tourism destinations.
The Desert Islands consist of Sir Bani Yas Island, the heritage-rich Dalma Island and six offshore outcrops, the Discovery Islands, which will offer a desert island style camping environment, Marsa Jabel Dhanna which will be the destination’s arrival, departure and logistics hub. All will be linked by ferry, hydrofoil, water taxi and private resort boat services. Designed as a sanctuary of nature and authenticity, Desert Island will be a singular destination with experiences rivaling those of the Caribbean and the Maldives. In line with TDIC’s overriding commitment to sustainable development, Desert Islands will be a showpiece in environment stewardship.
Desert Islands will host a variety of hotels and accommodation ranging from five star properties to more affordable family oriented options. In all, some 3,000 rooms will be created. The first property, the boutique 64 room, five star Desert Islands Resort & Spa on Sir Bani Yas, which is wholly-owned by TDIC, will open in the final quarter OF 2008 under management of Anantara Resorts & Spas. Development of the destination will be phased, at an estimated total cost of AED US $3.2 billion. When fully operational, Desert Islands is expected to annually generate AED 1.2 billion (US $ 326 million) in tourism revenues, equivalent to a GDP contribution of AED 858 million (US $235 million) and create around 6,500 jobs.
COMPONENTS
At the heart of destination lies Sir Bani Yas Island which, as a wildlife reserve and bird sanctuary, will showcase nature through activities such as adventure safaris, bird watching and snorkeling. It is a tourism destination as well as lifestyle island for second and third homes. With sustainability a key development principle, the islands will have research and educational facilities for tourists and scholars.
Dalma Island
Home to the first permanent settlement of the Arabian Peninsula, Dalma is an island that celebrates its living heritage. Inspired by, and building upon the existing Dhow Marina, the local fishing and boat building culture will be transformed into a waterfront destination alive with daily activities and local tradition. With a new emphasis on the local arts, this cultural waterfront will be home to a new arts centre, promoting local arts within the greater island community. The first step on Dalma, the Desert Island Education Centre has already opened, and empowers locals to take part in growing tourism industry through education and facilitation.
